Administration and IT – National 4 & 5

Content

This course is designed for those who are interested in administration and practical uses of ICT. Learners will be able to utilise the acquired administration and IT-related knowledge and skills, at home, in the community and ultimately in employment. Learners will develop a range of both generic and subject-specific skills including the ability to use the following IT applications; word processing, spreadsheets, databases and desktop publishing and additional IT packages. Learners will also develop the ability to organise and support events (including meetings); problem solving skills and qualities and attributes required of administrators.

Administrative Practices

Covers key legislation affecting employees, customer service, skills and attributes of junior administrators and organising small-scale events.

IT Solutions for Administrators

Involves creating, editing and updating business documents through the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Communication in Administration

Covers using emerging technologies to gather, process and interpret information in administration-related contexts.

Administration in Action (Added Value Unit)

Within this unit learners will undertake a practical administration and IT-based assignment which will be underpinned by the learners’ basic knowledge, understanding and skills developed in the other three units.

 

Assessment

All units are internally assessed on a pass/fail basis. These assessments may be on a unit-by-unit approach or by using a combined assessment.

Assignment – requires learners to use previous knowledge and skills to organise and support a small-scale event.

Assignment – 100 marks

Homework

Homework will be distributed regularly (mostly weekly) averaging about 30 minutes per week. Homework will be handed out at least one week before it is due in, to give pupils the opportunity to analyse the task and clarify any queries.

Value of the course

It is expected that learners will also develop broad, generic skills through this course. The skills that are likely to be appropriate to this course are listening and talking, number processes, employability, ICT, remembering, understanding and thinking.

Business Management- National 4& 5

Content

Business plays an important role in society. We all rely on businesses and entrepreneurs to create wealth, prosperity, jobs and choices. The purpose of the Course is to develop learners’ understanding of the way in which businesses operate in the current dynamic, changing, competitive and economic environments, and to encourage entrepreneurial attitudes.

This course is designed to allow students to achieve either a National 4 Business award or a National 5 Business Management award according to ability. The external assessment for Business Management requires candidates to have a good level of literacy.

Business in Action covers how businesses are organised by exploring the functional activities, such as marketing.

Understanding Business covers sectors of industry and types of business organisations and their stakeholders.

Influences on Business covers the role and influence of stakeholders on businesses.

Management of People and Finance covers recruitment, selection, training, employment legislation, sources of finance, budgeting, breakeven analysis, and profit and loss statements

Business in Practice this is an assignment which will allow learners to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding they have gained from across the other Units of the Course.

Management of Marketing and Operations covers market research, marketing mix, ICT in marketing, choosing a supplier, types of ethical production, stock control, quality management techniques and ICT in operations.

Assessment

  • National 4: All units are internally assessed on a pass/fail basis. No external examination.
  • National 5: All units are internally assessed on a pass/fail basis. In addition pupils will sit an external examination worth 60 marks (75% of course) and will complete an assignment in class (which will be externally marked) worth 20 marks (25% of course)

Value of the course

  • The Course will develop enterprise and employability skills;
  • Learners will also develop skills including using ICT to gather, analyse and communicate business information efficiently and effectively;
  • Learners will be given opportunities for working co-operatively with others to complete activities and by being able to work independently or to lead activities when appropriate;
  • Successful completion of this Course opens up a range of vertical and lateral progression routes for learners; including Higher Business Management.
