Miss A Dickson

Teacher

What qualifications do you have that are relevant to your teaching post?

I graduated from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, with a BA (Hons) in Drama and Performance. During my time at QMU, my degree gave me the opportunity to study all different areas of the theatre, including acting, production, scenography, costume, marketing and finance and entrepreneurism. I gained my PGDE from the University of Edinburgh.

Can you please tell us how your interest in your subject area has translated into the world outside of school?

I was an active member of various drama groups during school and university, including Scottish Youth Theatre. I still take part in amateur dramatic productions – when I have the time!

Can you summarise what is it about your subject that you love?

I love seeing pupils being creative and being themselves in class, and showing pupils that not all of their strengths can lie within academia.  Being able to give them the opportunity to develop key skills such as confidence, resilience, teamwork, communication, organisation and above all, creativity – all skills which they will take with them into their future. I have seen pupils have experiences within Drama that they will take with them for the rest of their lives, and that is a very powerful thing. Pupils have the chance to explore themselves and the world around them in Drama, in their own creative, interesting (and often hilarious!) way, and being able to facilitate that is a gift.
