Craft Design Technology S5/S6 Course

Product Design Higher

Content

Higher Craft & Design is a design-based course which investigates the functions of aesthetics and ergonomics of a design problem. This will demonstrate the ability to show knowledge and understanding of the process of designing and how it operates in industry.

Internal assessment

There are four internal unit assessments.

External assessment

There is one examination paper to test knowledge and understanding of factors which should be considered in designing and manufacturing. This examination lasts 2½ hours and is worth 80 marks.

There is also one design assignment. Students select a topic from a list provided by the SQA and to the satisfaction of the teacher. They will develop solutions through all stages of the design process to arrive at a solution which is fully represented in graphical form. The solution will be produced as a production prototype or model. The product will be evaluated against the design specification and the result recorded. The design assignment is worth 120 marks.

Homework

Homework, investigations and designing must be done at home.

Value of the course

Useful in design, construction and manufacturing vocations and university courses.

Entry requirements

Entry to the Higher course is open to students who have Credit level Craft & Design or Art & Design at Standard Grade.

Technological Studies Higher & Intermediate 2

The description of the Higher course is a broad guide to the Intermediate course.

Content

The Higher course consists of : The Intermediate course consists of :

  • Applied Electronics (40 hours) Applied Electronics (40 hours)
  • Systems and Control (40 hours) Mechanical Systems (20 hours)
  • Structures and Materials (20 hours) Energy (20 hours)
  • Case Study Report (20 hours) Systems and Control (40 hours)

It is mainly of an investigative nature, developing the topics introduced at Standard Grade and building on the knowledge to further expand students’ abilities commensurate with modern technology.

Internal assessment

Each unit has learning outcomes which students must achieve.

External assessment

This will take the form of a written examination lasting 3 hours and worth 100 marks.

Homework

Homework is given on a regular basis to consolidate work done in class. The case study report will require some work out of school.

Value of the course

Accepted as a university entry requirement and useful for many engineering courses; an essential component of a group award in engineering. Passing this course will also qualify students for core skills awards in numeracy, information technology and problem-solving.

Entry requirements

Entry to Higher is open to students who have gained a Credit level in Standard Grade Technological Studies. Students who have an interest in the subject and have a good understanding of Mathematics and/or Physics will also be welcome.

It is expected that students interested in the Intermediate course would have a General level in Standard Grade Technological Studies or a sound ability in Mathematics or Physics.

Graphic Communication Higher & Intermediate 2

The description of the Higher course is a broad guide to the Intermediate course.

Content

The Higher and Intermediate 2 courses each consist of three units

  • Technical Graphics I
  • Technical Graphics II
  • Computer Graphics

Higher Graphic Communication offers a progression in the acquisition of knowledge and skills from Standard Grade and is intended to prepare students for more advanced study or for employment.

The structure of the course reflects the use of graphics in business and industry, developing the use of manual and computer skills. Emphasis will be placed on the graphics incorporated in the product design process from concept through to marketing which will be assessed in the form of a Thematic Presentation.

Internal assessment

Students must pass the unit assessmentsand complete a coursework portfolio. The Thematic Presentation will be internally assessed and externally moderated.

External assessment

Student must pass an examination covering all three aspects of the course.

Homework

One hour per week on graphic knowledge and working on the Thematic Presentation.

Value of the course

University entrance: useful in advertising, marketing, architecture, designing and graphic presentation and design.

Entry requirements

Students for Higher should have a Credit pass in Standard Grade Graphic Communication. Students for Intermediate should have a General pass in Standard Grade Graphic Communication.
