Craft Design Technology S1/S2 Course

First Year Course Description

2 x 40 minutes (double)

Aims

To introduce S1 pupils to life in the CDT department, and to introduce a series of skills in design, manufacture and graphics, which will form the backbone of the skills they will need as they progress through the department.

Course outline

The pupils start out in the department, with 2 process models, one in wood, and one in metal. This allows the pupils to pick up the good working practises they will need in a controlled environment.

They will then move through units of drawing work, to develop their graphic communication skills.

The skills built up so far are then channelled into craft and design models, where the pupils are encouraged to problem solve, and to stretch their abilities.

The specific order of these activities may changes due to constraints on workshop availability.

Teaching approach

For skill building reasons the early part of the course is teacher led, but as the course progresses the pupils will be encouraged to think for themselves, and to make decisions based on their own judgement.

Homework

Tool information worksheets, materials worksheets, finishing off graphic work, as required.

Overall

The S1 course is all about building skills up, and about the enjoyment of designing and making.

Second Year Course Description

2 x 40 (double)

Aims

To build on ability in design, manufacture, graphics and technology, which will form the backbone of the skills they will need when they choose to come back for Standard grade. Each element of the course is designed to give the S2 pupils a good idea of what is needed in each of the 4 standard grade subjects we offer in S3 / S4.

Course outline

The pupils work through a craft and design project (in preparation for Craft and Design), a wood skill builder project (in preparation for Woodworking Skills), and a metal skill builder project. They further develop their graphic skills (in preparation for Graphic Communication), and well as undertaking a unit of work on micro controller programming (in preparation for Technological Studies)

The specific order of these activities may changes due to constraints on workshop availability.
